Testimonials

Thank you for these classes, Kenny!! My kids love them and they keep asking me when the next one is! You have such an amazing way of making them feel safe to express their feelings, which is especially great for them now in these scary times we’re all living in. They’re always happy and inspired from your class, plus your classes give me a chance to do other things while they’re with you...so I look forward to the next one too! :) Thank you!!

Weekly for the past 14-years, Kenny has been a volunteer teacher to teenaged girls, aged 13-18, incarcerated in Los Angeles Central Juvenile Hall Jail. Over 2,500 teen girls have been his students in his weekly life-story writing & drawing classes and his now 10th annual Thanksgiving Day writing & art-making workshop behind bars: “A Writing Girl’s Journey of Life, From Anger & Despair to Gratitude & Self-Love.”

Here are some of his students’ testimonials. (Please note the following students’ spelling and grammar respectfully remains intact as written by each of them. Last names are withheld due to these students being minors within the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Justice System. Thank you.)

Thank you Kenny for this beautiful workshop. I’m so thankful for you. You truly are an angel sent from heaven and a blessing from God. You showed me what true love is. I hope you get to bring joy to many other kids like me that are unfortunate and have to spend their Thanksgiving in jail. Thank you thank you and thank you! I will always remember this and you too!
— Beverly B., Age 17, Proud and loving mother of 2, Central Juvenile Hall Jail, Los Angeles, California
Thank you Ken for coming here. It proved to me that you actually care about us, unlike other people. I love that you love your job. That’s what I admire most about you. Also how you think about us kids in jail. Thank you so much Ken. I learned a lot being in your “InsideOUT Writers” class, mainly how to express myself (smiley face drawing). Thank you Ken! (heart drawing)
— Sarah S., Age 16, New Mom!
Ken, thank you for being here for us. Thank you for sitting here and listening to us. Thank you for coming almost every day and putting joy into our life, making our sad days turn into good days, even after you leave here. Thank you for being the person you are. Thank you for teaching me how to let go and not to keep my anger inside. Thank you for letting me know (that) if I actually read my writings out loud I can feel better and that people around me DO go through some of the same things I go through. Thank you for blessing us. I also thank God for waking you up each day and letting you breathe another day and for giving you strength 2 prepare all these classes for us. And thank you for not letting your own dreams go away. Thank you for being a teacher and a writer and an artist. You will always have a place in my heart. I’m so thankful 2 have you in my life Ken!!!!
— Ebony M., Age 17
Ken’s Inside-Out Workshop is the first and only workshop that I feel has actually impacted me and my peers. Ken brings a profound passion into his work, creating an understanding and compassionate environment in which I felt free to express myself and free to write and draw. I truly enjoyed and grew in this workshop. Ken not only invited us to engage in a positive catharsis, he also allowed us to channel our negative feelings into pen and paper, which I think is a challenge for most adults...much less kids like us locked up in jail.
— Dilcia F., Age 17
I’m grateful to you Ken coming into these halls every class and always there for us girls. You could be out there in your life doing a zillion other things, but you volunteer to come into this jail to teach us, and I’m so grateful for you for that.
— Kayla R., Age 17
Because of you Ken, now I know how to express myself on a piece of paper. Thank you for taking the time and do this for us. THANK YOU!
— Destaney T., Age 15

This workshop with Ken has made me find me! It made me realize that I’m a very important person. It made me realize all my flaws & pain & tears of sadness. It made me learn how to forgive. I never really forgave anyone until now. This workshop improved my self-asteem and made me realize im greatful for the things I’ve been through good and bad. I’m greatful for Ken coming today and every other time, cause he doesn’t have to. I’m thankful for the food he brought. I’m thankful for how he cares about the children who are misunderstood, misused and abused, and especially for seeing the real kids we are instead of what the society says we are. I love Ken and for volunteering to teach us like he does every week.
Thanks!!!! Sincerely,
— Garrika H., Age 16

If I had not attended this workshop, I would not have built up the guts to say so many things that I needed to say to my dad. I need to tell him how much I love and appreciate him. Things I have been longing to tell him but have not been able to put into words until now.
Thank you so so much Ken for showing me my courage.
— Kendell J., Age 16
Dear Father,
I wanna thank you for waking me up this morning. It’s kind of funny that I’m in here (in juvenile hall jail), but everything happens for a reason. Ken came to the halls and we had so much fun. Even though I wasn’t home with my family I was still safe because of this class. Ken made my day – not only my day but he made my turkey day this year, so I just wanna say thank-you and God bless you Ken.
— Sade T, Age 17, CJH Unit C

Testimonials from Kenny’s writing workshops for adults worldwide, “LifeScripts: Writing a Path to an Authentic Life”

Kenny Mirman’s ‘LifeScripts Workshop’ was structured in a way that kept me engrossed and inspired from beginning to end. The material he shared and presented was marvelous. Some of the participatory exercises we engaged in were profusely catalytic in opening deep thoughts from my past experiences: Words flowed without interruption full of depth and meaning. The workshop was a little over three months ago and yet I am still processing and gleaning positive energy from it. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward with hopeful expectation to revisit other teaching-learning opportunities from Kenny.
— Jeff Borden, Pastor, Washington
In Kenny’s writing workshop, all the written exercises have made a great impact in me. What I’ve written has surfaced significant awareness about myself that I have not seen before. I’m very appreciative and thankful to Kenny for stirring up those deep places in my soul to enable me to be more intentional in living my life in an authentic way. I know future participants will be as blessed as I have been.

Testimonials from a few of Kenny’s colleagues and clients:

“Kenny is a very special human being. He is a natural teacher and healer, like an angel. He is able to reach into the heart of a person and see them with such clarity, then offer life-transforming solutions to them within minutes for the obstacles they’ve been facing for years. He does it with such amazing insight, compassion, love and generosity, and it’s given in such abundance. Really, I take notes when he talks he is so gifted. I am very emotional about this because all my life I’ve suffered, and I’ve never thought about the things that he’s now shown me, and so he’s changed my life forever. He saved me. He’s the most amazing teacher and person I’ve ever met, and I don’t even have the words to express my gratitude for how he’s given me a new way of seeing, and a new way of living.”
— Sadhna Sud, RN MS NP-C, Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, Case Manager Emergency Department Cardiology, Stanford Hospital & Clinics
Kenny Mirman has a great gift. If I had to put it into words, his gift is profound empathy and a mystical awareness. There are certain individuals in the world that are wired into the Universe, the source and the soul, and he is absolutely one of them. His wisdom, awareness and teachings are so deep and evolved that they appear from him spontaneously as if from an ancient Chassidic Rabbi, and as far as I’m concerned, I believe Kenny’s soul is the reincarnation of one of the great ones. He has the innate ability to resonate with individuals in a way that provides them a view of the beauty and truth that is already within them – but maybe had been lost from their life until now. It’s proven to be a life-changer for the many individuals he’s touched. As a teacher, the insight that he provides his students is big and transformational – such as when he helps his teenaged students incarcerated in jail to see life in ways they’ve never imagined. It is an honor to know him and to study with him.
— Rabbi Levi Cunin, Rabbi & Founder, Chabad of Malibu
Those girls in jail that get to be Kenny Mirman’s students every week are so incredibly lucky. It’s life changing. He is life changing. It’s truly amazing to me. All I can do is say thank you Kenny for sharing who you are and for how you see the world, how you see each of us, and how comfortable you are about sharing your truth the way you do, so completely transparent and vulnerable it allows me to be that way more and more.
